2-[18F]fluoro-A-85380 is a radiolabeled small molecule ligand specifically designed for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of the central nervous system. It is an analog of the potent nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist A-85380, where a fluorine-18 isotope has been incorporated to enable non-invasive visualization of receptor distribution and density. The drug displays exceptionally high affinity and selectivity for the alpha4beta2 (α4β2) subtype of nAChRs, which is the most abundant nAChR subtype in the human brain and is implicated in various cognitive processes. Primarily used as a clinical research tool, this tracer allows investigators to quantify cholinergic receptor deficits in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, as well as to study the pathophysiology of nicotine addiction and cognitive dysfunction.
